Our Approach
How we work with charities: clarity first, then the foundations
Evolve Catalyst works with small UK charities in one order, every time: get clear first, then build. We don’t arrive with a fix ready or a stack of services to sell. We start by understanding what’s actually happening, help you decide what matters most, and only then put the foundations right. That sequence is the whole idea behind Charities Built with Clarity.
Fix the cause, not the symptom
Most charity problems aren’t caused by a lack of effort or commitment. They come from foundations that were never quite put right, quietly putting pressure on the people running things. Treat the symptom, and you get short-term relief; find the cause, and the problem stops coming back.
The four foundations – governance, strategy, systems and income – are connected, so when one is weak, the strain usually shows up somewhere else. Fundraising struggles often trace back to an unclear strategy. Leadership pressure often traces back to governance that doesn’t support decisions. Day-to-day chaos often traces back to systems no one can use. We work on the foundation that’s actually causing the problem, not the place where it happens to hurt.
How we work, step by step
Three steps, in the same order every time.
STEP 1: Understand where you really are
We start by listening to trustees, the CEO, the team, whoever holds the picture. We look past the problem you came in with to find what’s underneath it, because the problem a charity notices and the one actually causing it are often different. For a lot of leaders, this is the first time someone has seen the whole situation clearly, rather than a simplified version of it.
STEP 2: Get clear on what matters most
Before anything gets built, we help you decide what actually matters now and what to leave. This is the step most easily skipped, and the one that changes everything. When every task feels equally urgent, nothing gets the focus it needs; clarity is what turns a long list of pressures into a short list of decisions. Nothing gets built until it’s clear what’s worth building.
STEP 3: Put the foundations right, so they hold
Then we do the work on whichever of the four foundations the charity needs, in whatever order makes sense for you. Governance that holds. A strategy that guides decisions. Systems the team can actually use. Income that doesn’t lean on a single source. And we build it to last after we step back, rather than to depend on us – so the change is still working a year later, not unravelling the moment we’re gone.
The same three steps, at any stage
These steps don’t change with the size or age of a charity. One that hasn’t started, one that stalled years ago, and one that’s established but pulled in too many directions all need the same thing: to understand where they are, get clear on what matters, and put the right foundations in place. What changes is the starting point, not the method.
Systems, governance and strategy are closely connected. When one is weak, strain often shows up elsewhere. For example, fundraising difficulties are often linked to unclear strategic direction. Leadership pressure can stem from governance that doesn’t properly support decision-making. Operational chaos is frequently caused by unclear roles, processes, or responsibilities. Our work focuses on building these foundations so problems are resolved at their source, not repeatedly managed.
What working with us is like
We work alongside you, not above you. This is mentoring and practical support, not a report handed over at the end and left for you to act on alone. Your team stays involved throughout – we help make the decisions, clear the obstacles, and get the changes in place, while respecting the time and capacity you actually have. We know Charity Commission requirements and the real constraints you work within, so what we suggest is practical rather than theoretical.
What changes
Charities we work with tend to notice the same things:
- less time lost to crisis mode, and more spent on the work that matters
- decisions that trustees and leaders can make with confidence
- governance and oversight that hold up to scrutiny
- leaders with room to think, not only to react
- a charity steady enough to plan ahead

Start with where you are
If you’re not sure which of the foundations is really the problem, that’s fine – that’s Step 1. Tell us where your charity is now, and we’ll help you work out what comes next.
