Our Story

Why I Founded a Charity Consultancy After 15 Years in the Sector

From Charity Experience to Strategic Support

For 15 years, I watched brilliant charities struggle with broken systems, unclear communication, weak fundraising, and governance gaps that held them back from real growth. Many were stuck in the same place for years, unable to move forward.

These weren’t isolated issues. They were systemic. And something had to change.

The Charity Management Patterns I Kept Seeing

What 15 Years of Charity Work Taught Me About Real Problems

During my time working inside charities across operations, IT, marketing, fundraising, and strategic planning, I noticed a pattern: the organisations struggling most weren’t failing from a lack of passion. They were held back by systemic problems no quick fix could solve.

Here’s what I saw repeatedly:

Broken systems across organisations. Messy donor databases. Websites that confuse visitors and fail to communicate impact. Tasks taking far too long because nothing connects properly. Small gaps in one area caused issues everywhere else.

Passionate teams drowning in admin. Staff and volunteers spending more time on spreadsheets, compliance forms, and broken processes than on delivering their mission or engaging supporters.

Governance gaps creating risk. Unclear roles and responsibilities. Decisions made without proper frameworks. Compliance gaps that could erode funder and public trust.

Fundraising feeling desperate instead of strategic. Teams chasing donations reactively rather than building sustainable relationships. No clear strategy, no diversified income, just constant firefighting.

Leadership stuck behind desks. Charity leaders who started their organisation to make a difference now spending most of their time on policies, reporting, and bureaucracy.

I realised charities didn’t need another service provider; they needed a mentor who truly understood their world. Someone who’d been there, seen the pitfalls, and could build systems that actually work.

That’s the big why behind Evolve Catalyst.

Why I Started Evolve Catalyst

Creating the Charity Consultancy I Wish Had Existed

Charities needed a partner, not another service provider. Someone with lived experience who understands the pressures, constraints, and complexity of running a mission-driven organisation with limited resources.

I’d worked in the gaps. I’d seen how a single broken system could ruin marketing, fundraising, operations, and team morale. I’d watched brilliant strategies fail because the operational foundations weren’t there to support them. I’d witnessed governance confusion create significant risk.

Evolve Catalyst was built to fix these root causes, not with quick wins or surface-level improvements, but with real, sustainable change grounded in strong systems, governance, and strategy.

About Ghamdan Al-Areeky

How My Journey Drives My Approach

I’ve spent 15 years working across the full spectrum of charity operations:

  • Operations & Systems – Small gaps ripple through the whole organisation.
  • IT & Digital – From websites to data systems, tech can empower or overwhelm teams.
  • Marketing & Communications – I know how to tell a charity’s story and engage supporters.
  • Fundraising – I’ve been in the trenches, feeling the pressure of unsustainable approaches.
  • Strategic Planning – Helping charities think beyond tomorrow to build lasting growth.

This experience taught me one thing: good intentions aren’t enough. Charities need governance, systems, leadership, and strategy to thrive.

My Philosophy

“Working in the charitable sector has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life. I’ve built relationships with inspiring people across the UK charity space, and I feel a responsibility to use what I’ve learned to help these organisations maximise their impact and grow sustainably.”

I started Evolve Catalyst because I had to create a consultancy that genuinely helps charities. The work charities do is essential, and the people doing it deserve strong, reliable support.

5 Lessons from 15 Years That Drive Everything We Do

Insights That Guide Our Charity Mentoring & Consultancy

Lesson 1: Governance Is the Foundation

Most charities underestimate governance; however, weak frameworks put everything at risk. Defined roles, decision-making frameworks, and regular reviews protect your mission and keep your organisation stable. Without it, everything else is built on sand.

Lesson 2: Systems Make Money and Time Work for You

Chaos kills impact. And marketing, fundraising, and operations aren’t luck; they’re systems. When your systems run smoothly, your team saves hours, fundraising becomes predictable, and your charity can focus on what matters most.

Lesson 3: Compliance Builds Confidence

Compliance isn’t bureaucracy, it’s trust in action. Follow Charity Commission rules, manage data properly, and handle processes thoughtfully. Donors and funders will see your integrity, and your charity will gain credibility.

Lesson 4: Leadership and People Matter Most

Your people are your power. Clear communication, strong culture, and genuine support prevent burnout and create an environment where your team can thrive and deliver maximum impact.

Lesson 5: Impact & Growth Come From Long-Term Thinking

Quick fixes are short-lived. Real growth comes from strategic planning, measuring what truly matters, and building systems that last so your charity continues to thrive five years from now and beyond.
